*SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1903 MILITARY RIFLE WITH WARNER & SWASEY SNIPER SCOPE. SN 753794. Cal. 30-06. Usual configuration with 24″ bbl marked “SA / 11-17” with flaming bomb in middle. It has usual receiver ring markings and is mounted in a 1-pc walnut stock with grasping grooves and “J.F.C.” cartouche. It also has the “P” proof on straight grip. Buttplate is smooth steel with trap. Bbl has standard 03 sights with stamped sheet metal front sight hood and Buffington rear sight. Left side of receiver is mounted with a Warner & Swasey rail containing an orig Model 1913 Warner & Swasey scope, SN 7788. Scope still has its orig rubber eye cup that has nearly crystallized. Accompanied by an orig leather model 1913 scope case with shoulder strap marked on top front “ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL 1918” with inspector initials. Bottom front of case has a small sewn on pocket with buckle & tab flap containing a rare orig flat blued steel combination tool. The Model 1913 was a culmination of several different experiments with sniper scopes and served through most of WWI with some good effect. Reports previously read by this cataloger indicate that the mounting system was reasonably delicate and difficult to maintain adjustment. There are numerous instances of field modifications where screws were added at various locations on the rails to make the mounting more stable. In fact, the mounting on this unit has an additional screw near the front end of the slide which attaches it more securely to the rail. Even with the additional screw the mount still has a little play. PROVENANCE: Alan Brown Coll. CONDITION: Rifle retains virtually all of a fine professionally restored finish, possibly from the armory. Stock appears new and retains all of its fine oil finish. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bore. Optics appear to have a little trash inside but are clear with intact crosshairs. Eye cup, as noted above, is nearly crystallized and misshapen. The carrying case is sound with light soil and some minor verdigris around rivets. Carrying strap is dry & delicate but still serviceable. Combination tool is fine 4-39336 JR323 (3,000-5,000)
