PAIR OF CHINESE IVORY FIGURES OF CONFUCIOUS. Ming Dynasty. Fine pair of Chinese figures in pure ivory seen leaning over in a hunched pose. The figures depict two poses of the sage Confucious. One of the figures is seen with one hand resting on his right knee with the left hand held at the back. His face is shown in a very serene smile, his beard is long and flowing, his robes are beautifully decorated and lightly stained. The second figure is depicted holding a staff hunched over slightly in his old age, he is shown with a warm smiling expression and low beard. His robes are beautifully decorated and expertly stained. Both figures are seen resting upon rock formations. SIZE: 5-1/4″ h. PROVENANCE: Private collection of Dr. & Mrs. Winfield Gibbs, Sunbury, PA; Ashkenazi Auction, 11/28/88.
