FABRIC FROM THE PLANE IN WHICH BARON VON RICHTHOFEN DIED. Original piece of fabric cut from Baron von Richthofen’s Fokker Dr.I 425/17 triplane. The fabric was souvenired by W. M. Hatcher of No. 3 Squadron, Australian Flying Corps. The plane and Richthofen’s body were removed from the crash site to the No. 3 Squadron’s hangars. Hatcher mailed the fabric to aviation historian Charles Donald from his home in Australia with an accompanying note. The fabric measures about 2” x 2-1/2” in size. Its outer surface is painted a deep red, some of which has chipped revealing sky-blue paint underneath, indicating that the fabric came from under the aircraft, which had been camouflaged before the Baron had it repainted in his color. This piece of fabric and the note appeared in “Cross & Cockade” Vol 10, No. 4 as an illustration in the article “Post-Mortem:Richthofen”. It appears on page 306 of the Journal. The lot also includes a reproduced photograph of von Richthofen with a stamp on the back indicating that it came from the collection of WWI photo collector Steve St. Martin. The fabric has been authenticated by noted WWI fabric expert Alan Toelle. Ex Charles Donald collection. 4-50191 (2,000-3,000)
