*1903 SPRINGFIELD ARMORY ROD BAYONET. Cal 30-03. SN 40081. 24.2” bbl. The ramrod bayonet ‘03 is considered the Holy Grail among Springfield collectors. Unaltered examples with any condition at all are considered extremely rare as most were modified to the 1905-1906 update. Bore is in excellent condition but could use a cleaning. Mechanically fine. CONDITION: Gun appears to be 100% orig with 98% plus bluing to receiver and bbl. Front sight pin is possibly a replacement, and in fitting, left a grind mark on each side of the sight. Bolt has blued handle with polished body and nitried/fire blue extractor. Bands retain 90% plus orig bright blue finish. Trigger/floorplate assembly retains 85-90% blue. The buttplate retains 90-95% orig finish as does the sling swivel and stacking swivels. Wood is in fine condition with the exception of a slight dent 3” behind the trigger guard and a slight mar just next to the rear sling swivel. The script and dated “1904” cartouche and circle “P” fireproof are very prominent as well as “L” sub-inspector between the circle “P” and the trigger guard. This is one of the finest examples of a rod bayonet that this cataloguer has had the opportunity to see. 4-57782 BK11 (24,000-30,000)
