VERY EARLY COLT BABY DRAGOON REVOLVER WITH CONFEDERATE CONNECTIONS. CAL. 31, standard Baby Dragoon with 5″ oct. bbl without rammer. Cylinder has round stop holes and has brass grip frame with 1-pc wood grips. Top flat of bbl is devoid of the orig. Colt markings but there is very faintly visible the word “Orleans”, presumably the stamp of a New Orleans retailer. Accompanied by a hand written letter dated 8/2/01 by Paul Harwell stating that this revolver was owned and used by Confederate Col. Henry C. Kellogg, who was the great uncle of Harwell and also was the clerk of the Dahlonega Mint in Georgia in 1861. Apparently after the Confederacy seized the mint, Kellogg joined the Confederate Army as Captain and by the end of the war had become a Brevet Brigadier General and allegedly carried this revolver throughout the war. SN 182 CONDITION: All matching, except the wedge which is a modern replacement. No orig. finish remains, no marking remains on bbl and no scene remains on the cylinder. Iron parts are a medium gray-brown patina with nicks and dings on cylinder, several replaced screws. Repaired and refinished grip and solder repairs on the back strap where it meets the frame. 4-45263 Z150 (3,750-4,750)
