AMERICAN SCRIMSHAW SCREW TIP POWDER HORN WITH IMPORTANT IRISH INFLUENCE. A wonderful American engraved powder horn measuring 12″ long with a graceful curve, much orig. decoration and great color. The horn is shaved and faceted at the spout end with a brass carrying ring and stud. The spout is threaded. The plug end has a plain walnut insert also with a brass carrying ring applied. Four round head brass tacks secure the plug. Much of the horn is heavily decorated with a very nicely executed 3-masted ship on the sea in full sail and a sunburst and crescent moon above. Clasped hands, “Ireland Forever”, a house with trees, and a standing sailor and woman are posed next to a wedding arch with the initials “WS” above. Finally, a large engraved Irish harp and shamrocks adorn the panel next to the wedding scene. Rising from the faceted spout end are five deeply carved lancet shaped carvings. CONDITION: Very good, the color is excellent, the screw tip spout is missing. Carvings are relatively sophisticated, wear has obliterated some of the ship scene. A very strong horn with Irish influence. 4-45424 CW (1,500-2,500)
