INDIAN USED BROWN BESS CUT-DOWN MUSKET. CAL. about 75. Appears to be a cut-down 3rd Model Brown Bess with the side of the buttstock shaved down, having a circle of brass tacks on each side and missing the buttplate which shows substantial wear in this area. The bbl has been reduced to 27-3/4″ with a commensurate reduction in the forestock and relocation of the orig. upper ramrod guide. These modifications, coupled with the missing buttplate, are reminiscent of known “blanket rifles”. The lock plate is marked “WILSON” and the breech end of the bbl is marked with a crown and broad arrow British proof. CONDITION: As previously noted, the bbl retains a mottled silver-brown patina with moderate pitting and rust around the flash hole, possibly an old reconvert. The lock plate and hammer are mottled silver and brown and the frizzen and pan are lightly rusted. The stock has an old repaired crack in the wrist and numerous grain checks in the butt area. A very interesting piece of native Americana. 4-45282 JL239 (1,000-2,000)
