NORTHWEST PERCUSSION TRADE GUN CHIEFS’ MUSKET BY PARKER FIELD & SONS. ca. 1868 CAL. about 60. Beautiful trade musket with 30″ oct. to round bbl, full-length stock, brass ramrod guides containing a brass tipped wood rammer. The breech end of the bbl has various British proofs and what probably was the fox cartouche. The lock plate is marked with the makers’ name over “LONDON” in front of the hammer with the date 1868 vertically behind the hammer and the fox touch mark at the back edge. The sideplate is a scaled serpent secured with three screws. A similar example appears in “The Northwest Gun” by Charles Henson. CONDITION: Very good. The bbl retains an even dark brown patina with scattered rust and widely scattered spots of heavy pitting. Heavy pitting on the hammer and around the nipple area. The wood is sound missing some minor chips around the lock plate and retains most of an old refinish. 4-45355 JL264 (2,500-4,000)
