BARNETT CONVERSION NORTHWEST TRADE GUN CHIEFS’ MUSKET. ca. 1819 CAL. about 60. Fine old chiefs’ musket with 36-1/2″ oct. to round bbl. Small pinched iron front sight, two decorative brass ramrod guides with a replacement ramrod. The breech end of the bbl has various British proofs and a small touch mark, probably a seated fox. The lock plate is marked “BARNETT” and the date 1819 vertically behind the hammer. There is a small circle cartouche on the right side of the buttstock that is indecipherable but probably is a seated fox. The stock has teardrop side panels and a teardrop carving around the top tang. The trigger guard is large and made of smooth iron and the buttplate is smooth brass. The sideplate is a scaled serpent secured with three screws. A similar example appears in “The Northwest Gun” by Charles Henson. CONDITION: Good to very good. The iron retains a dark brown patina with scattered light pitting, heavier around the nipple area and on the lock plate. The wood is sound, apparently missing a band near the muzzle and retains most of a very old refinish. 4-45352 JL266 (2,500-4,000)
