S.C. ROBINSON ALTERED VIRGINIA MANUFACTORY MARKED MUSKET. CAL. 69. 1816 Model musket converted to percussion by Samuel C. Robinson in Richmond during the Civil War. The lock plate has the date “1818” and “RICHMOND” vertically behind the hammer and “VIRGINIA” horizontally in front of the hammer. The bolster is 1842 pattern with a brass filler in the pan slot. It is standard 1816 pattern with iron furniture, 3-bands and button head ramrod with 1-pc walnut stock. There are crude initials “AF” on the left side panel and larger crude initials “AGF” upside down on the left side of the butt. There is a large “S” inspector mark on the iron sideplate. Accompanied by several pages of a book describing the Robinson alterations. CONDITION: Good, plus, with the metal retaining a dark brown patina with light pitting over most of the surfaces, heavier around the bolster and lock plate areas. The wood is very worn with a dark oiled finish, a crack at the heel and a repaired crack on the right side of the forestock. Missing some splinters by the barrel channel. A scarce and desirable Confederate used musket. 4-45514 JL447 (2,500-3,000)
