SECOND MODEL BROWN BESS SHORT LAND PATTERN FLINTLOCK MUSKET. CAL. about 75. Tower marked lock with the crown over “GR”, 42″ round bbl with square front sight/bayonet lug. It has a brass nose cap with a 3-7/8″ long brass upper guide, two smaller brass guides and a brass nose pipe with a button head iron ramrod. The trigger guard is long brass with ball finials. The sideplate is flat with a long tail and a ball finial. It has an acorn shaped brass thumb plate and brass buttplate with short stepped tang. There are proof marks in the wood below the lower tang. The forestock and trigger guard are fitted with iron sling loops. The top tang is wedge shaped with a raised carving completely surrounding. The breech end of the bbl has British broad arrow proofs. The stock has a fine swell at the nose pipe and raised panels on each side of the wrist. CONDITION: Very good to excellent. The bbl retains a dark brown patina with light pitting over the pan area. The lock is crisp with all the legends sharp. The wood is sound, missing a long sliver on the right side bbl channel with another stapled sliver in the same area. The left side of the bbl channel also has a repaired crack. There is a small area of wood fill just in front of the pan. Otherwise the stock is beautiful with a fine hand-rubbed patina on the forestock and wrist areas with the balance being a dark patina. A fine Brown Bess musket that could have seen Revolutionary War service. 4-45280 JL254 (3,500-5,000)
