CONFEDERATE USED POCKET WATCH. Gold hunter case key wind pocket watch with an early wood fired locomotive engraved on the cover with surrounding floral and arabesque pattern and engraving. The back cover is engraved “TGR TO S.W. RABB”. The inside back cover is engraved “JOHN WATT RABB/SON OF JOHN GLAZIER RABB/WAS KILLED IN THE BATTLE OF GAINES/MILLS, VA., JUNE 30-1862, WEARING/THIS WATCH, AND CARRYING THE/COLORS OF THE 6TH SOUTH CAROLINAS/REGIMENT”. This is a 16 size watch with single spring loaded cover. This cataloger was unable to open the inside cover to determine the number of jewels or the maker. The dial is unmarked. This watch is accompanied by invoices of sale and a letter from Sumpter Military Antiques dated 1-31-96 transferring it to someone named Thomas. Also accompanying are two packets of copies of archival muster rolls of the 6th Reg’t So. Carolina Infantry listing J.W. Rabbs service beginning in April 1861, appointed Sargent in June 1861 and listing as killed in the battle of Frazers Farm Virginia November 29th 1862. There is also an entry that shows J.W. Rabb as having been killed in the seven days battle in Richmond, VA June 27-30 1862. There are other numerous entries regarding this individual. CONDITION: The cover shows moderate wear. The front cover does not close securely as the inside bezel does not lock down. The back cover closes but does not latch securely. 4-45162 JL344 (2,250-2,750)
