AMERICAN INDIAN WAR PERIOD OFFICER’S DRESS CHAPEAU. Conforming to the 1872 regulation, this officer’s chapeau stands 4 1/2″ high and is made of beaver felt with two diagonally set silk ribbon decorations. Each tip is adorned with gilt wire tassels and the entire hat is overlaid with two black ostrich plumes. The front bears a large oval black silk cockade surmounted by a rectangular gilt embroidered badge with an applied brass eagle insignia and a 3-piece U.S. Staff officer’s button. The interior is of quilted black silk with an inset crown of black silk. The crown is stamped “Warnock & Co..New York…” in gold ink. CONDITION: Very good, the hat shows light wear with minor fraying to edges and interior lining. 4-45401 CW (500-700)
