SHARPS MODEL 1874 SPORTING RIFLE. CAL: .40-70. 28” oct. bbl. A letter from Dr. R.L. Moore shows that this was shipped to the “State Rifle Assn.” on September 17, 1873. Since the state was not give, we assume this was the State of Connecticut. The letter mentions that it was equipped with a fancy butt. The butt that is currently on the gun is plain with straight grain wood and has a double prong brass orig. Sharps Swiss buttplate. The lower buttplate screw hole under the butt has been filled and re-drilled. SN C,53728 CONDITION: 50% thinning blue on the bbl. with dents and gouges and some light surface rust. The action has a blue/gray patina with light pitting overall. The buttstock is modified from a military stock with a pewter inlay where the swivel plate was installed. The forearm has been reworked, glass bedded, and a non-factory metal tip installed. The serial number has been ground off the bottom of the bbl. The rear sight is a replacement. The action is good, bore has been cleaned bright but some pitting remains. 4-45176 (4,000-5,000)
