CARVED 19TH CENTURY CONTINENTAL IVORY RENAISSANCE REVIVAL DIRK.

Purely Renaissance in design this mid-19th Century Dieppe-style ivory carving emulates the masterpieces created 400 years earlier. This knife is in beautiful condition, missing only its once velvet covered grip where bare wood remains now. Pommel is a florally arabesque decorated orb, crossguard terminates in the heads of sheep. Scabbard has elaborate detail panels in high relief of semi-nude cherub standing on dolphin above another large panel of coat of arms and panoply of arms. Dieppe carvings were exceptionally popular among the English elite and quite possibly this is a known British coat of arms that could be researched though there is a dramatic two-headed eagle below the crest.NOTE: Certifiable antique Ivory. SIZE: Overall: 16″. Blade 10-1/4″. Knife with handle: 14-3/4″. Special Note: This item contains plant or animal properties that may be covered by the Endangered Species Act (ESA). We have taken care to ensure that this item meets the standard for sale under the ESA. However, certain states and other countries have laws that are more restrictive than the ESA. It is the bidder’s responsibility to ensure that it is lawful to purchase or transport this item into their state, and to obtain the necessary import and export approvals. Delay or failure to obtain any such permit or approval does not relieve the buyer of paying for the item and consummating the purchase. CONDITION: Very good to fine overall. Blade has iron patina, gray/brown overall. Scabbard is complete retaining velvet cover on reverse which would have been much like velvet grip cover, which is missing. There is a chip in throat above cherub’s outreached hand and several hairlines as seen in photo. 50711-1 IVORY (3,000-5,000) – Lot 3548
