LARGE PHOTOGRAPHIC IMAGE OF THE FAMOUS CHIEF JOSEPH OF THE NEZ PERCE INDIANS.

This late 19th/early 20th century image is on a large glass plate mounted in a window frame. It depicts one of the greatest Indian Chiefs of all time, Joseph of the Nez Perce Indians. The Nez Perce were a peaceful tribe living on the west coast of the United States in the latter part of the 19th century. They were responsible for the famous Appaloosa horse, they were skilled farmers, and attempted to live in harmony with the white men, but to no avail. The extraordinary Chief Joseph finally made the decision to lead his people to Canada where they hopefully could live their lives in peace. The U.S. Government dispatched a cavalry after them to force them to a reservation of the government’s choosing. Chief Joseph would have nothing of that and took his entire tribe and headed to Canada. On the way, they were attacked on multiple occasions sometimes by overwhelming forces with the most modern weaponry. Joseph and his entire band, in each case, managed to out fight and elude the U.S. Cavalry. Finally with many or most of his braves dead and his people nearly starving, they thought they had finally made it into Canada, stopped established a camp and later were surrounded by the U.S. Cavalry, only then discovering that they were still within the borders of the United States. The Cavalry captured them and forced them onto a reservation. This is an image of the handsome Chief standing in the landscape. SIZE: 22-1/4” wide x 23” high (glass only). 27” wide x 36-1/2” high (including the frame). CONDITION: There is some deterioration to the photographic image on either side of Joseph.
