TRUE FOUR BORE PERCUSSION RIFLE BY R. CHAPLAIN.

SN NSN. Cal. 4 bore. 1.090 groove diameter. 4 wide grooves. 33″ Ovate bbl with octagonal breech section, is engraved “Robert Chaplain London” on top flat. A standing leaf rear sight, two nested folding leaves and a German silver barleycorn front, are dovetailed through. There is a Sanscrit (?) inscription on left flat at rear. There is no provision for a ramrod. A large sling eye is affixed to bottom of bbl. Patent breech is nicely filed and has some large scroll engraving matching that on breech iron. This engraving extends to lock which mounts large serpentine flat faced hammer. Top front of lock is engraved “R. Chaplain”. There is an interesting pivoting spring clip attached to stock in front of lock, purpose unknown. All furniture is of iron. Trigger guard has stylized pineapple finial, and buttplate has long tang. Both pieces are also scroll engraved. Relatively plain tropical wood straight grip stock has coarse checkering at grip and forend, which has ebony tip. Stock attaches to bbl with captive side nail through shaped steel escutcheons. Drop at heel: approx 2-3/4″, drop at comb: approx 2″. Weight: 12 lbs. 4 oz. LOP: 14-5/8″. CONDITION: Good, as partially refinished. Bbl retains most of an old re-brown with good definition to pattern. All other metal parts are a smooth gray to brown patina. Replacement (?) wood has been refinished, and retains most of that finish. Bore is very good, lightly pitted throughout. Lock is crisp. 49958-31 MGM22 (4,000-7,000) – Lot 3187
