FOUR BORE ROBERT HUGHES PERCUSSION DANGEROUS GAME RIFLE WITH CASE.

SN NSN. Cal. 4 bore. 1.080 Groove diameter. 7 wide grooves. 30″ Tapered octagonal bbl is engraved “Robert Hughes Universal Firearm Works, Birmingham” on top flat which is also fitted with folding ladder rear sight graduated to 800 yards, with steel bead front, both dovetailed through. Bbl is fitted with under rib and two plain pipes, one with sling eye. Pipes hold rosewood ramrod with brass tip and steel worm at tail under brass cap. Patent breech shows some scroll engraving. Military shaped bar lock with more simple scroll, is engraved “R. Hughes” and is fitted with large round bodied military type hammer. Case hardened steel trigger guard has stylized pineapple finial, and tang which forms pistol grip. Dense European walnut stock measures 14-3/4″ over steel buttplate, and features swept right hand cheekpiece, point pattern checkering at grip and forend, and a sling eye as well as a vacant silver shield on toe line. Forend tip is of horn. Stock attaches to bbl with single captive side nail through shaped steel escutcheons. Drop at heel: approx 2-3/8″, drop at comb: approx 1-5/8″. Cast: Neutral. Weight: 15 lbs. 9 oz. LOP: 13-2/4″. Possibly orig quartered oak case with inlet brass corners and circular central medallion has pivoting hook and key lock closure. Case is lined in green cloth, and has reproduction Hughes label in lid. Case contains an old re-polished and blued round ball mold stamped “4” casting a 1.01 diameter ball, steel patch cutter marked 1-3/4″, bone striker bottle, bone handled cleaning brush, large brass bodied powder flask throwing charges up to 5 grams, a round pewter oil bottle, some cleaning brushes, and lead balls. CONDITION: Very good as restored. Bbl retains nearly all of an old re-brown. Other iron parts retain a restored colored case hardening over considerable pitting, engraving slightly washed. Stock retains an old refinish, checkering re-cut. Stock has been repaired through area of lock, and glue in crack has begun to crawl, but does not flex. Bore is good with strong rifling throughout, lightly pitted. Lock is crisp. Case exterior has been refinished and has a number of longitudinal cracks. Interior cloth renewed, and is very fine.
