CARVED GILT SOFA ATTRIBUTED TO S. KARPEN BROS.

Late 19th, early 20th century, Chicago. Fine gilt decorated and carved example combining Victorian and Art Nouveau carved elements. Crestrail carved with elaborate floral spray with trailing tendrils continuing to ogival wings joined to outswept floral carved arms centering three overupholstered panels above the overupholstered seat. Armrests deeply carved with scrolling leaftips continuing to similarly carved frontal cabriole legs centering the seat rail carved with floral cartouche flanked by scrolling vinery in Art Nouveau taste. SIZE: 43-1/2″ h of back x 56-1/2″ w overall x approx 31″ d. CONDITION: Structurally very good. Gilt surfaces intact and also very good. Frame now covered in muslin. Central flower in crest with some loss and abrasion to top flower petal. 50898-11 (1,500-2,500) – Lot 3181
