FINE AND RARE PAIR OF ALLEGORICAL COPPER RELIEF ‘SHIELDS’.

Last quarter 19th century, Massachusetts. These rare examples illustrate the use of a then newly invented process of electroplating. Invented and patented by the maker Robert Hill Barre, born in Glasgow, Scotland who emigrated to Everett, Massachusetts. He succeeded in receiving a US patent August 12, 1879 which was for “improvement in reproducing objects by electricity”, a fore runner of today’s electroplating process. These shields are the product of the plating process for which Robert Barre received his patent. The first is a beautifully executed and detailed depiction of the story of Adam and Eve illustrated in three separate panels, the second depicts the battle between the Archangel Michael and the fallen angel Lucifer. SIZE: 1) 34″ h x 26″ w. 2) 35″ h x 26-1/2″ w. PROVENANCE: Designed and executed by Robert Hill Barre 1838-1913, by descent through the family to the current owner. A copy of his patent document and emigration papers is included with this lot.
