GOTHIC REVIVAL WALNUT CALENDAR REGULATOR CLOCK.

First quarter 20th century, Northern Germany. This large and heavily carved regulator with peaked molded cornice beneath a scrolled crest with turned finials, a classical cast brass mask in the frieze above the bevel glass paneled door surmounted by Byzantine columns with scrolled brass capitals above cast brass female busts. Cast grotesque masks are mounted at either side of the base of door on corbels. The door with beveled glass plates. The interior fitted with a clock and calendar movement above a pendulum window, all with cast brass facings and with polychrome painted and foliate decorated back plates. The clock face with silvered Roman numeral chapter ring centering time and strike apertures with enameled inner dial. The calendar movement with three apertures, the upper aperture with days of the week, the central aperture is for the number of the date of the month, and the lower aperture with months of the year, all on silk and rotating on drums. The pendulum aperture with cast brass ring, reveals a burnished and etched brass pendulum with silvered outer ring. The pendulum decorated with entwined serpents around a central torch inscribed “VERITATEM APERIT DIES”. The molded base with carved corbels and pendant turned finials with scrolling apron with cast-brass elements of pineapple and scallop shells. SIZE: 57″ h x 20″ l 10″ w. CONDITION: The case and all cast elements in very good condition as are the dials and decorated back plates. The spring driven eight day brass movement striking on a bell is only partially assembled, missing the bell, winder and possibly missing additional cogs. The days of the week and months of the year appear intact, the 31 day silk strip is torn in half. 50743-1 (2,000-3,000) – Lot 3086
