FINE AMERICAN CARVED OAK TALL CASE CLOCK WITH MARKED TIFFANY & CO. DIAL.

American carved oak tall case clock (1886-1909). Carved case by Tobey Furniture Co. of Chicago. 1) The brass and silvered dial marked “Tiffany & Co” beneath the chapter ring. The brass eight day movement, time and strike, striking on a coil driven by two weights. A moon phase dial in the arch. We believe that the movement may very well be an unmarked example manufactured by J.J. Elliot Co. Ltd. of London. 2) Many cases of this style and model were fitted with Elliot movements including the last example that we offered and sold in our Fine Art and Antiques Auction of February 2014, Lot 3091. The quarter sawn oak case is extensively carved, the bonnet having grotesque mask within the carved crest, a three dimensional bagpiper and horn player flanking bonnet door. The bonnet joined to case throat carved with lion heads within a foliate border above the molded panel door carved with C-scrolled volutes above a grotesque mask over trailing bellflower and foliate carved leaftips. The door flanked by engaged tapering square columns or pilasters carved with fan and shell cartouches on molded carved bases. The throat joined to box base with concave molding. The lower panel carved in high relief depicting a tavern scene with three figures gambling at a table flanked by conforming pilasters headed by carved lions heads. The whole on a floral dentil molded carved plinth raised on compressed ring-turned ball feet. 1) Similar case models were being offered by Tobey Furniture Co. in 1900. 2) JJ Elliot was a clock craftsman of the late 19th century. He was a great innovator, interested in creating high quality clocks that were interesting to listen to. In 1865 JJ Elliott began his clock making apprenticeship with “Bateman” of Smithfield, London. By 1882, Elliott was established as a “manufacturer of fine quality clocks”. In 1909 Elliot merged with Grimshaw Baxter. “Tobey Furniture Co. of Chicago” was founded in 1856 and was a leader in the marketplace for handmade carved furniture. In 1905 “Toby Furniture Co. of Chicago” opened a showroom in New York on West 32nd street, near 5th Avenue. This offered “Tobey Handmade Furniture” a market on the east coast. Having this new location probably is responsible for the collaboration between Tobey Furniture Co. and Tiffany & Co. A nearly identical clock reproduced from the Toby Catalog and referred to as a “Flemish” clock is illustrated in Duy Ly, Longcase Clocks and Standing Regulators, Part 1, Machine Made Clocks p. 422, fig. 979. SIZE: 8′ h x 26-1/2″ w x 16-1/2″ d. PROVENANCE: From a central Connecticut collection. CONDITION: Superior original condition. Original dark finish. Very fine old patina. Movement clean and operable. Some paint loss to moon phase dial. A glue repair to element of horn of bagpiper. Otherwise very good. 52011-1 (6,000-8,000) – Lot 3037
