INCREDIBLY RARE, HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT, AND ASTONISHINGLY COLLECTIBLE BLACK STEIFF TITANIC MOURNING BEAR WITH BUTTON.

One of the most sought after vintage Steiff bears in the world. Teddy is made from black mohair and is 5-ways jointed with tan felt paw pads. Solidly stuffed with excelsior. Non-working growler. With black hand-embroidered claws on hands & feet. Teddy’s face is detailed with highly distinctive red felt backed shoebutton eyes and a black hand-embroidered nose and mouth. Teddy retains long trailing “F” button and a slight trace of his white tag. Only 655 total of these red backed eye bears were produced in response to the sinking of the Titanic in 1912 and according to the consignor, only 78 were made in this size and mohair configuration. The red was to indicate crying and sadness at the extent of the tragedy. SIZE: Overall 12-1/2″ t (31cm). Sitting 9-1/2″ t (24cm). PROVENANCE: Chuck & Cathy Steffes Collection. CONDITION: Professional restoration on right paw pad. Other paw pads have extremely minor spotting. Otherwise very good. 1-13786 (25,000-40,000) – Lot 3025
