VERY RARE COLT PATERSON MODEL 1839 U.S. CARBINE. SN 377 on bbl, arbor, and buttplate 630 on cylinder and 332 on rotating ring, there is no SN on the wedge or loading lever. Cal. .54 smooth bore, 24″ 16-sided to round bbl. Only 360 of these were purchased by the US Government in four separate orders. Marked “Patent Arms M’g. Co. Paterson, N.J.-Colt’s Pt.” with star and sine wave at each end on the right side of the bbl. “PATENT ARMS MAN’Y. PATERSON JERSEY” on circumference of cylinder with three cartouches, one containing two ships, the other is not visible. “W L ORMSBY” is stamped at right angles across the “P” in Patent. There is a faint “WAT” inspector mark on the left side of the stock above the rear of the trigger guard. Note the unusual shape of the trigger guard. The flash guard at the nose of the hammer is broken off and is missing. The wedge does not have a number and the tip of the catch spring is broken off. CONDITION: Gray-brown patina overall with light pitting at the breech. The wood has many dents and scratches including three where a large headed screw has struck the right side near the butt.
