PHILADELPHIA CHIPPENDALE WALNUT ARMCHAIR.

Third quarter 19th century, Pennsylvania. The shaped crest rail with scrolled backswept ears centering a shell carving above the pronounced vasiform splat flanked by shaped styles joined to arms with outcurved molded hand grips with scrolled volutes on incurved supports centering a trapezoidal frame with slip seat. The frontal rail with conforming scallop shell carving raised on frontal cabriole legs terminating in well carved ball and claw feet, the rear legs backswept. SIZE: 41″ h of back, 16-3/4″ h of seat, 29-1/2″ h overall. PROVENANCE: From a fine private Long Island, NY collection. CONDITION: Overall nicely polished surfaces with good color and patina. Pegged construction throughout with no evidence of restoration but with visible stress cracks to front quarters of seat frame. Chair retains original glue blocks. Extremities of talons showing normal and expected wear resulting in absence of claw tips. Very good overall. 9-93300 (4,000-6,000) – Lot 2348
