COLLECTION OF WHITE HOUSE BRICKS.

1792-1817 Washington D.C. This collection removed from the White House during the near total renovation under president Harry Truman started in 1949 and completed in 1952. The public was afforded a brief opportunity to purchase various souvenir kits upon direct visitation to Pennsylvania Avenue. In consulting with an author who wrote a few chapters on the matter, 15 or so different kits were offered ranging from a single nail, to a piece of wood, to a chunk of limestone, single brick etc. There were a very select group of people who opted to purchase the most extravagant kit available, “enough bricks to build a fireplace.” This particular purchaser had no intention of purchasing such an expensive and frankly excessive lot, he accidentally checked the wrong box and a few months later a freight truck showed up at his doorstep with 800 pounds of brick and he paid for them and the transit costs via the Pennsylvania RR. The group is comprised of 16 complete bricks, some cracked, 7 mostly complete examples approx 75% whole, approximately 29 fragments 25%-35% whole, and an assortment of fragments of varying size. The collection is accompanied by 1 plaque of authenticity attached to a brick, and a second, unattached plaque, supplied to the original purchaser by the Commission on Renovation of the Executive Mansion. Also accompanying the collection is a newspaper clipping with a story with photo of the original purchaser, a photo of Roy Wise showing one of his bricks, and two letters on White House stationary written by and for Major General Glen E. Edgerton, the Executive Director of the renovation project. Both are addressed to Roy L. Wise. SIZE: Size of full brick- 8-3/4″ X 4-1/4″ X 2-3/8″. PROVENANCE: Sold to the present owner by the family of the original purchaser and accompanied by documentation & authentication plaque. CONDITION: As found as described above. 9-94389 (10,000-15,000) – Lot 2312
