RARE RECRUITING BROADSIDE 14TH PENNSYLVANIA CAVALRY.

This wonderful broadside has a 9″ x 14″ vignette of a Union Cavalry charge against Confederate Infantry possibly this is a rendition of Colonel James Schoonmaker’s gallant attack at Cedar Mountain (Winchester) mentioned in this poster. Schoonmaker would go on to win the Medal of Honor leading his troops at the Battle of Winchester in 1864. William Amann’s book Personnel of the Civil War published in 1961 does not list the Washington Cavalry as a local designation for Company A, 14th Pennsylvania Cavalry but we know from this recruiting poster it needs to be updated. Regardless this is a wonderful poster in beautiful condition with the poetic phrasing “TO HORSE! TO HORSE! MY ALL FOR A HORSE!” “COME TO YOUR COUNTRY’S CALL, to put down TREASON and REBELLION and hand down to your children, unimpaired, the rich legacy of the Glorious Union achieved by your Forefathers…” SIZE: 22″ x 16″. PROVENANCE: Norm Flayderman Estate Collection. CONDITION: Very good as mounted on linen with two brass grommets in upper corners. There are several cracks at folds with small paper losses as can be seen in photographs. This poster will display and present as well as the finest posters of this era. 9-93039 (2,000-3,000) – Lot 2275
