IMPORTANT MOLDED AND GILDED COPPER CENTAUR WEATHERVANE. Third quarter 19th century, attributed to A.L. Jewell & Co., Waltham, Massachusetts. The graphic flattened full body figure with verdigris and brown surface with remnants of old gilding beneath later faint brushstrokes of brown and/or black paint. The centaur drawing a bow and arrow modeled with pierced eye and with greatly accentuated nose and chin. The sheet copper tail well feathered as are the centaur’s fetlocks. With pleasing surfaces and credible visual history. Now offered with museum stand. Literature: A similar vane attributed to A.L. Jewell is illustrated in The Art of the Weathervane by Steve Miller, Schiffer Publishing Ltd., Exton, Pennsylvania, p. 66. Another owned by the Shelburne Museum in Shelburne, Vermont is illustrated in Weather Vanes: The History, Design, and Manufacture of an American Folk Art, by Charles Klamkin, Hawthorn Books, Inc. publishers, New York on page 164. SIZE: 27″ h. Overall on stand: 30″ h. 33-1/2″ l. PROVENANCE: This example was removed from a large property in Lake Forest, Illinois in the early 1960s. It then became part of a private collection from which it was purchased by the current owner. CONDITION: Very nice surfaces as noted. Old restorations at neck, base of tail and tip of arrow. Vertical support tube is replacement. There is vertical compression mark present on proper left side of centaur’s body behind support pole. 9-93028 (30,000-50,000)
