FINE PORTSMOUTH FEDERAL INLAID MAHOGANY SECRETARY BOOKCASE. Circa 1810, Portsmouth, New Hampshire. In two parts, the bookcase with molded cornice above the frieze of three crossbanded rectangular panels over a pair of doors with narrow Gothic lancet panes similarly inlaid, above a pair of solid crossbanded doors opening to an arrangement of small drawers over a row of valanced pigeonholes over a pair of stationary drawers. The lower case with hinged folded writing surface opening to rest on lopers and with original midnight blue baise-lined writing surface, above four graduated long drawers, crossbanded and with cockbeaded edges. The whole on bracket feet with shaped returns centering a rectangle crossbanded drop panel in the apron. NOTE: Each loper is pencil inscribed with the name “SALTER” in reverse and in mirror image (see photo). The Salter family was a well documented Portsmouth family (see provenance). A well documented example of a secretary with several similar decorative elements commissioned to Judkins & Center by Jacob Wendell is illustrated in “Portsmouth Furniture”, edited by Brock Jobe, pp. 178-179, Plate 33. SIZE: 78″h x 39″w x 20-3/4″d. PROVENANCE: By descent through the Salter family to the current owner, within the family. CONDITION: With old cleaned surfaces; the upper doors with small molding losses; pair of doors with horizontal shrinkage cracks; minor and minimal warping to lid; other small losses and restoration to veneers, minor in nature; hardware, feet and backboards remain original.
