SIMON WILLARD MAHOGANY BANJO TIMEPIECE.

First quarter 19th century, Boston, Massachusetts. The case of typical form with suppressed ball and spire finial above the convex glass hinged door opening to an enameled steel dial inscribed “Simon Willard & Son” in script above “BOSTON” within a roman numeral chapter ring with time only aperture. The single bridge brass movement with deadbeat escapement and with filaster bolt fasteners above the eglomise painted throat glass depicting a stylized floral narrow bouquet in a stylized urn within the conforming gilt scrolling border alternating with ruby and emerald painted swags. The numeral “72” impressed on throat glass and box base door. The throat flanked by brass side arms. The box base paint decorated with an early scene of the Boston State House and so marked in gilt lettering. The bottom board of the base is missing. Single piece backboard is intact. *NOTE* For a similar example see Willards Patent Timepieces by Paul J. Foley, pg 45, figure 98. SIZE: 32-1/2″ t x 10″ w. PROVENANCE: The clock a gift from Arthur Cutts Willard to the grandmother of the present owner. CONDITION: Case surface retains old finish, dial original with original signature, numerals over-painted, scrubbed in some areas, arrow hands original, pendulum appears original, suspension spring needs replacing, bolts for tie down bar are missing. Glass is original, touched-up and throat glass cracked. Replaced iron weight. Side arms original. Case bottom absent as mentioned. Good overall. 51189-1 (1,500-2,500) – Lot 2230
