*SCARCE WESTLEY RICHARDS HAND DETACHABLE EJECTOR DOUBLE RIFLE IN 22 HI POWER WITH SCOPE AND AMMO.

SN 17663. (ca. 1920) Cal. .22 HP. 26″ Shoe lump bbls are fitted with quarter rib mounting one standing, four folding leaf express rear sight, sighted to 500 yards. Quarter rib is also fitted with claw scope bases. 2-1/2″ of large shaded scroll is transition to broad mid rib engraved “Westley Richards 23 Conduit St. London. Gun Makers By Appointment To H M The King”. More scroll makes transition to front sight base fitted with Westley’s patented flip-over sight protector, and silver bead front sight with flip-up porcelain night bead. Top rear of left bbl is engraved “For .22 Hi Power Cartridge”. Bbl flats are stamped with Birmingham nitro proofs, caliber, and “CORDITE 22-1/2 – 70 MAX”. Bottoms of bbls are stamped with SN, and auxiliary no. 18228, most likely designating a re-barrel, as Westley Richards assigned a new number to each set of bbls. Case hardened action with hand detachable locks (use no. 2791) features automatic safety with pivoting bolt (SAFE and BOLTED inlaid in gold), Westley Richards famous long dolls head and sliding bolt third fastener, bushed strikers, and double triggers. Engine turned hand detachable locks are accessed under hinged floorplate/ cover. Action is engraved with near 80% coverage well cut, medium scroll. “WESTLEY RICHARDS” is in scroll terminated riband on each side, and it is also engraved at top of action in front of lever pivot over “EJECTOR”. Floorplate is blued and has near full coverage of scroll surrounding scene of ibex in mountainous setting. Trigger guard is gold inlaid “.22. H.P.” on bow. SN is on tang which extends to steel trap grip cap, containing spare fore sight. Nicely veined and lightly figured European walnut steel capped pistol grip buttstock measures 14-1/2″ over ribbed composition buttplate. Stock features right hand shadow line cheekpiece, drop points, point pattern checkering with mullered borders at grip, and a sling loop, matching that screwed to bottom rib, along with a gold rectangle engraved “AR”, on toe line. Matching slim splinter ejector forend has inlet horn tip and Deeley release. Drop at heel: approx 2-9/16″, drop at comb: approx 1-13/16″. Weight: 8 lbs 12 oz. LOP: 14-1/2″. Accompanied by a B. Nickel Supra-4×36 scope and box each of Dominion and Norma cartridges. A recent sight-in target is also included. PROVENANCE: Copies of the factory ledger pages for this rifle showing it to be one of a pair made 3/26/20 for H.H. Patiala. The most famous Maharaja of Patiala, the Maharaja Bhupinder Singh (1891–1938). He is perhaps best known for his extravagance, and for being a cricketer. His polo and cricket teams were among the best in India. CONDITION: Fine, as mostly refinished. Bbls retain over 95% of a satin re-blue, with some subsequent marks and spots. Action retains traces of orig case color where protected, but is mostly dark silver to pewter to gray. Floorplate has been re-blued and retains nearly all of that blue, engraving slightly softened, and mountain scene has some light pitting. Blue of top lever and trigger guard are excellent, engraving softened especially at grip. Stocks retain nearly all of an old oil refinish, with a number of subsequent marks, checkering re-cut. Bores are very good, strong rifling throughout, lightly frosted in grooves. Action is tight. Bbls are on face. Ejectors are in time. Optics are clear. 49626-1 MGM379 (20,000-30,000) – Lot 2228
