IMPORTANT CHIPPENDALE BLOCKFRONT MAHOGANY SECRETARY BOOKCASE.

1770-1780, Boston, Massachusetts. In two parts, the upper case with molded swan’s neck cresting surmounted by three spiral twist finials above a pair of astragal arched panel doors with fluted pilasters opening to an interior fully fitted with two rows of valenced pigeon holes above a row of open compartments for documents above four aligned short drawers, the molded base fitted with candle slides. The lower section with hinged sloping lid of figured mahogany resting on lopers opening to a fitted interior of a row of valenced cubby holes above four banks of two short shaped drawers centering a fan carved prospect door over four graduated blocked long drawers, all with original Chippendale pierced brass hardware and pierced escutcheons on a conforming molded base raised on bracket feet with deeply scalloped returns centering a drop pendant. The upper and lower case sides each mounted with brass carrying handles. SIZE: 97-1/2″ h x 39-1/2″ w (case) x 26″ d. Overall width: 42″ w. PROVENANCE: From a fine private Long Island, NY collection. Northeast Auction March 2, 2002 Lot 754. CONDITION: Desk retains original clean polished surfaces with rich brown coloration and undisturbed patina. Hardware original as noted. Backboards original with rosehead nails. Possibility that portions of the base have been restored or replaced along with other cosmetic repairs professionally well done.
