THE APPELL FAMILY FINE CHIPPENDALE CARVED MAHOGANY BLOCK-FRONT SLANT-LID DESK.

Third quarter 18th century, Boston, Massachusetts. The rectangular dovetailed case of figural mahogany with hinged sloping lid opening to a three fan blocked interior, fully fitted with an arrangement of valenced pigeon holes and blocked drawers centering a fan-carved prospect door flanked by document drawers with flame pilasters. The case with four graduated blocked long drawers accentuated by bold period brasses on a molded base raised on boldly carved cabriole legs terminating in well proportioned ball-and-talon-feet centering a pendant drop with finely carved shell in deep relief. The case sides fitted with brass carrying handles. SIZE: 43-1/2″ h x 42″ w (case) x 22″ d. PROVENANCE: Ex Joe Kindig, Jr. Ex Appell collection of Mr. & Mrs. Louis J. Appell. Sold at Sotheby’s New York to the current owner, a fine private Long Island, NY collection Jan 18, 2003 Lot 1092. CONDITION: The desk retains well polished surfaces with old mellow patina. Brass hardware is of the period. Feet appear to have full height. Base possibly with portions that have been professionally restored or replaced, the work of fine quality. Two drawers retain old locks, locks absent on bottom two drawers. Minimal and minor professional cosmetic restorations. Very good as noted. 9-93301 (10,000-15,000) – Lot 2213
