JEWELL HORSE & RIDER WEATHERVANE. 2nd half 19th century, Massachusetts. Attributed to A.L. Jewell & Co. This early example with untouched verdigris surfaces over traces of gilding. The formal rider with top hat and pronounced facial features in profile. The full body running horse with stylized indented eye and sheet copper ears. The arched tail a combination of molded and pressed copper with feathered edges. Offered with museum stand. NOTE: For an illustration of a similar vane, see “The Art of the Weathervane” by Steve Miller, p. 67. SIZE: 22″ h x 32-1/2″ l. PROVENANCE: From a private Florida collection. CONDITION: Fine early surfaces with areas of seam separation at base of neck and on raised foreleg. Rolled seam on belly slightly separated. With early repairs at hock on three legs.
