CHIPPENDALE SHELL-CARVED AND FIGURED MAHOGANY SLANT-FRONT DESK.

Second half 18th century, Rhode Island, probably Newport. The rectangular dovetailed case with hinged sloping lid resting on lopers opening to a three fan blocked interior of drawers and valenced pigeon holes centering a prospect door, above four long graduated drawers with thumb molded edges on a molded base raised on well formed angular bracket feet with shaped returns. The desk fitted with well cast hand made brass handles. SIZE: 42-1/4″ h x 37-3/4″ w x 21-1/2″ d. PROVENANCE: From a fine private Long Island, NY collection. South Bay Auctions Inc. East Moriches, Long Island, NY 11940. CONDITION: Backboards and feet original. Desk has been professionally repolished and restored including replacement drawer guides and slides, with bracing to backboards, and with additional cosmetic restoration.
