DELIGHTFUL LIGHTWEIGHT BIG BORE J. NOWOTNY HAMMER DOUBLE RIFLE MADE FOR A COUNT.

SN 5618. Cal. .577 2-3/4″ BPE. 26-1/4″ Dovetailed steel bbls are fitted with full length file cut rib dovetailed through for one standing, one folding leaf is rear sight. Folding leaf marked “250”. German silver bead front sight has flip-up copper night bead. Muzzle portion of rib is engraved with a 4″ arrow transfixing sight. Tops of bbls are engraved “J. Nowotny” and “In Prag”. Bbl flats are stamped with makers name and address, SN, and caliber. A sling loop is screwed to bottom rib. Coin finished round bodied Jones underlever type action is fitted with peninsula back action locks with round bodied serpentine rebounding hammers. Action is engraved with approx 60% coverage well cut small scroll. “J. Nowotny” is in scrolled riband on left lockplate, and “V Praze” is on right. Top of action is gold inlaid with large monogram “TMW” (?) surmounted by a count’s crown. Scroll engraved trigger guard is of steel. Nicely figured European walnut round knob pistol grip buttstock measures 14″ over checkered steel buttplate with cartridge trap with space for two .577 cartridges. SN is engraved on cover. Interesting attenuated checkering is at grip, and checkering extends to and covers area beside top and bottom tangs. Stock also features a nicely shaped right hand cheekpiece. A sling loop is on toe line. Small splinter forend is nearly fully checkered, has small schnabeled tip, and has interesting shape transitioning from sides to tip. Forend is fitted with forward pivoting release. Drop at heel: approx 2-1/4″, drop at comb: approx 1-1/2″. Weight: 8 lbs 2 oz. LOP: 14″. CONDITION: Very fine, as partially refinished. Bbls retain nearly all of a well done satin re-black over a few light marks. Engraving slightly softened. Action retains a considerable amount of its orig coin finish with some areas of darkening and spotting, engraving sharp and clear. Stocks retain nearly all of a hand rubbed oil finish with some checks in butt, repaired and filled at time of making, with a few subsequent marks, one pretty deep on right side of butt near heel. Checkering nicely re-cut. Bores are very fine, near excellent, strong rifling throughout, with some light frosting and one or two minor pits. Action is tight. Bbls are on face. Locks are crisp. A fast handling big rifle by this exceptionally fine gunmaker, undoubtedly made for hunting wild boar. 49266-5 MGM79 (6,000-10,000) – Lot 2205
