IMPORTANT LETTER REGARDING EVACUATION DAY (NEW YORK) SIGNED “Go WASHINGTON” NOVEMBER 27, 1783. George Washington as Continental Commander. Text in the hand of Richard Varick; signature by George Washington. The document/letter is made up of two parts. One; the letter from the thirteen citizens that were exiled on their own accord and are listed as the signers of the letter dated November 26, 1783, New York. The second part of the document/letter is Washington’s response “To the Citizens of New York who have returned from Exile”. He later goes on “may the tranquility of your city be perpetual-may the ruins soon be repaired…”. Second part is not dated. Please Note: Presumably there were thirteen copies that Varick made in which Washington signed; one for each of the returning citizens. Of these 13 copies there was a similar example offered at Sotheby’s December 11, 2008, Lot 144. SIZE: 13-1/2″ h x 8-1/4″ folded (16-1/2″ open). CONDITION: Some toning at fold marks, loss to some edges. Generally very legible and presentable. 9-91731 (15,000-50,000)
