FINE ANGEL GABRIEL WEATHERVANE.

American, late 19th century. Semi-dimensional hollow copper. Showing great charm and imagination, this weathervane is of a winged cherub blowing his trumpet. Mounted on its original iron and copper standard with ball and directional letters atop a later rustic wooden steeple. In Weathervanes, the History, Design and Manufacture of an American Folk Art, Charles Klamkin pictures a somewhat similar, if more primitive, version of the copper one offered here (see pg 159). Steve Miller, in The Art of the Weathervane, also shows a wooden Gabriel that more closely resembles our example. Mounted on a museum stand. SIZE: 35″ h (including separate gilded ball) x 52″ l x 3/4″ thick. Overall height including wooden steeple is 87″. PROVENANCE: From a private Midwestern collection. CONDITION: Very good with worn gilded surface that is pleasantly mellow and textured showing its history of exposure. Some solder joint weakness near belly and denting to ball. 9-94277 (20,000-30,000) – Lot 2177
