HISTORICAL CIVIL WAR RELICS. Removed from scrapbook of James Bolles Coit (1836-1894), who was a Civil War Brevet Brigadier General who served in the 2nd CT Volunteer Infantry as Sergeant Major, and as an officer in the 14th Ct. He later served as Chief of the Old War Division of the US Pension Bureau (1885-1889). Relics adhered to a page with notes: 1) Small strip swatch of cloth, “A piece of the flag of truce under which Gen. Robert E. Lee rendered the Army of Antietam -Virginia to Lieut. Gen. Grant” 2) Small swatch of cloth, “A piece of the lace curtain from the private box at Ford’s Theater, Washington D C occupied by President Lincoln April 14, 1865 the night he was shot by Booth” 3) Swatch of cloth, “Confederate flag from Ft Moultrie” 4) Swatch of cloth, “Christopher A. Brown, I was the Chief Engineer of the Steamer. W. Coit and helped adjust the Flag to the Flag staff to place on Fort Sumpter on Feb. 18, 1865, Norwich, Jan 19, 1892″. There are accompanying newspaper clippings, adhered verso is a clipped signature of Franklin Pierce, 14th American president and an 1853 letter by Gen. Hubbard.
