QUEEN ANNE TRANSITIONAL MAHOGANY BLOCKFRONT BUREAU TABLE.

Circa 1750, Massachusetts. A rare and choice example made of high grade Santo Domingo figured mahogany by a gifted craftsman, probably in Salem Massachusetts. The proportions and resolution of concave and convex blocking are appealing features of this kneehole desk. The combination of the medial frieze drawer with drop and central cabinet with tombstone panel, coupled with the drop pendant and scrolling of the bracket base, present a particularly beautiful and unified design. The simple Queen Anne brasses appear to be the original hardware and coupled with the side undermolds for top (now missing) predict date before 1770. SIZE: 29-3/4″ h x 33″ w (case dimensions) x 19-3/8″ d (case dimensions. PROVENANCE: From a Maine/Texas estate being sold unreserved. CONDITION: Generally good condition. Lock to full width drawer missing and lock to cabinet door replaced. Repairs to hinges of cabinet. Originally top had side moldings below like many blockfront chests and particularly bureau tables. This is an early example piece feature and originally very often they are missing as is the case with this piece. There remain scribe lines and witness marks from their presence. Interior central well with some 19th century wallpaper (not hiding anything). Base with obvious signs of casters having been applied and later removed. A variety of “make do” repairs to stabilize various foot components with glue, screws, and nails, as is usually the case with bureau tables. The only replaced tissue that is obvious in base is a small 1/2″ thick piece of pine where the rear brace meets the floor. However, there are numerous screws, nails, and re-gluing is obvious. The bottom of the chest is composed of two pine boards which is somewhat unusual but the dust board for the full width drawer is composed of identical tissue and was unquestionably original as well. Overall, this bureau table has a high degree of integrity and retains a pleasing historic surface. One key present. 51398-27 (20,000-30,000) – Lot 2109
