RARE “SQUARE IN SQUARE” 38-STAR AMERICAN FLAG, COMMEMORATING COLORADO, 1877.

Printed on glazed cotton and archivally framed. This rare canton has only been noted on maybe four or five other examples extant. Two consecutive squares of stars surround an unusual center grouping of two large stars and four tiny stars which also make a square. This is a beautiful and rare 38-star variant that would be difficult to upgrade. SIZE: Flag: 27-1/2″ x 20-1/4″. Frame: 32-3/4″ x 25-3/4″. PROVENANCE: The Collection of Timothy Gallagher. CONDITION: Very good to fine. Good colors. Minor staining and a few small reductions. There is a printer’s error in the canton where the sheet was folded when inked, appearing as a white streak which does not affect aesthetics. 51371-15 (2,000-3,000) – Lot 2073
