HISTORIC 37-STAR, GREAT STAR PARADE FLAG, COMMEMORATING THE DAY PRESIDENT JOHN GARFIELD WAS ASSASSINATED.

This beautiful silk printed flag with great star and quadrant stars is tipped into a scrapbook page with inscription “Given to me by Frank N. Walton on the day that President Garfield was shot by the Canadian Frenchmen J. C. Guiteau – July 2, 1881″. Charles J. Guiteau is the subject of recent numerous biographies and psychological studies of assassins. Guiteau was a bit of a celebrity the year he was in prison until he was hung, writing provocative letters to newspaper editors and is still subject to at least one recent biography. We’re not sure what Walton’s place is in history, but the backside of the scrapbook page shows the announcement of the marriage of Mrs. F. Neville Walton and John P. Lucas in San Francisco in 1890. The flag and scrapbook are archivally framed. SIZE: Flag: 7-1/2″ x 11-1/2″. Frame: 18-1/4″ x 15-1/4”. PROVENANCE: The Timothy Gallagher Collection. CONDITION: Flag is very good overall showing glue staining where tipped onto scrapbook sheet. 51371-13 (2,000-3,000) – Lot 2072
