RARE AND IMPORTANT MARQUETRY SEA CAPTAIN’S DOCUMENT BOX DATED 1713.

Circa 1713. The walnut box with hinged paneled lid, the upper domed panel inlaid with floral spray flanked by scrolling marquetry foliate design with spring loaded catch opening to reveal an oval escutcheon within the well all within a concave molded frame with applied molded edge. The lock within the well allows the hinged full top to open revealing a silk lined interior, scrolled lock and plate attached to the lid. The lid hinged on wrought iron cut hinges. The well fitted with a well appointed till with scrolled apron and molded hinged lid, all carved from walnut. The case with bombe sides beneath an in-curved frieze inlaid with the date of 1713, centering foliate marquetry, the front with large marquetry floral spray flanked by scrolling devices conforming with the top domed panel. The case sides mounted with original carrying handles and decorated with similar floral marquetry. The box with a step molded plinth. *NOTE* This fine example and unique form, seldom comes to market. SIZE: 12-1/4″ t x 25-1/2″ l x 15-1/2″ d. CONDITION: Structurally very good. Locking mechanism is intact and operable, master key is a later replacement cut to fit the original lock. Marquetry intact throughout. Surfaces original and cleaned now a mellow honey brown patina. Some additional darkening in spots where original shellac or varnish surface has worn off, minor in nature.
