EARLY AMERICAN MILITIA OFFICER’S BICORN DRESS HAT. A very early example of an American bicorn militia officer’s hat dated to the period 1815-25, and possibly earlier. Made of beaver felt with a narrow tarred linen edge binding. The front has three sets of two black twisted cord decorations arranged in a fan style. A black silk ribbon cockade adorns the left side surmounted by a brass die stamped spread winged American eagle and two flat gilt cord ribbons running up and over the edge of the hat. The interior has a beaver felt band about 2.5″ high and the entire interior (including the band) is covered in unbleached linen. The hat measures 9″ tall and 20.5″ from point to point. CONDITION: The entire surface shows wear and all of the hair on the beaver felt is worn smooth giving the hat a leather-like appearance. The edge binding is very good, the cord decoration a bit tattered (one cord has been lost) as is the interior lining which has one hole in the crown and some separation at the edges. Overall the bicorn presents a very aged but strong appearance. A nice example of an early Federal period militia officers hat. 4-46108 CW (3,500-4,000)
