CONFEDERATE FIRST NATIONAL FLAG. 21″ x 33-1/2″ flag composed of three horizontal bars of red/white/red and a blue canton containing seven white stars. This is the first flag, as Virginia became the eighth state to join the Confederacy in April of 1861. Accompanying the lot are letters from two nationally recognized experts, the first from Mr. Howard Madaus. Mr. Madaus is generally recognized as one of the foremost experts on Civil War flags and their history and the letter from him accompanies this lot sighting specifics about the flag and its use. The second letter comes from Fonda Thomsen. Ms. Thomsen is probably the foremost authority on early textiles and fabrics in the country and a letter from her regarding the analysis of textiles and thread in this flag, again affirm that is was Civil War made and used.
