LARGE LOT OF CIVIL WAR EQUIPMENT BELONGING TO LT. JAMES H. BIRD. Accompanied by Lt. Bird’s service record in Co. E of the 61st Ohio Infantry. He mustered into service 10 February 1862, was appointed 2nd Lt. 8 April 1862 and resigned 21 September 1862. The resignation was approved by various officers as being beneficial to the service. There is also an affidavit showing the purchase of this group from the great grandson of Lt. Bird. 1) Colt Model 1860 Army Revolver. SN 132762, all matching except wedge 45157. Cal. .44, 8″ round bbl. CONDITION: Traces of case-hardening color on the flats of the loading lever. Otherwise, gray patina with dents around wedge and light pitting at the muzzle. Grips have normal dents and scratches with a “JP” cartouche on the right grip and a visible but not readable cartouche on the left side. There is a small chip missing at the left toe. Mechanically fine. 2) Ames Sword. 34-3/4″ dbl fuller blade marked “U.S/C.E.W/1864” on the right ricasso. Partially readable Ames marking on left. CONDITION: Blade is fine with some original polishing marks. Guard and pommel have a mellow patina. Grip is good. Scabbard is evenly covered with a dry grease/rust/dirt covering. There is some light pitting where this has flaked. 3) Single Flap Holster with marked “E. GAYLORD/CHICOPEE /MASS.”. CONDITION: Plug is missing, surface is much flaked, belt loop is partially torn. 4) Civil War Officers buckle. Buckle is numbered 928 on the catch and has a German silver wreath around the eagle. Belt accompanying the lot has a matching number catch, one sword loop and the adjusting hook. CONDITION: Buckle is fine with some light verdigris. Belt is worn almost to bare leather with finish only on the attachments. 5) Frankford sword suspender with belt. Marked “E /CO /10″ on the short arm along with an unreadable cartouche. CONDITION: Dark patina on the brass. Leather much cracked with a period repair on the longer strap. 6) Gaylord Cartridge Pouch. CONDITION: Marking readable, light cracking to the inner box, heavier to the belt loops and tie-down strap. 7) Unmarked Sling. 37″ not adjustable. CONDITION: Light cracking with considerable loss of finish at the folded end. 8) Unidentified Tool. Consisting of a flat 3/8” hexnut wrench with a screwdriver blade on the opposite end. 9) Pocket Hymnal published in Cincinnati in 1847 with the name James H. Bird in pencil inside the cover. CONDITION: Missing the end papers, light foxing to the pages. 4-47035 FS566 (3,000-4,500)
