HIGH GRADE U.S. MODEL 1860 STAFF & FIELD OFFICER’S SWORD. An unusual, possibly, unique variant of the regulation U.S. Model 1860 Staff & Field Officer’s sword dating from the period 1865-75. Thin, dbl edged blade, 31-1/2″ long, diamond shaped in cross section with etched panels and “Schuyler, Hartley & Graham/New York” etched at the ricasso. Hilt is of cast brass with double clam shell counter guard. Front guard is cast plain with an applied sterling silver spread winged eagle and shield with a waving American flag above. The eagle is surrounded by 13 separately applied sterling sliver 5-point stars. The reverse counter guard is cast with an American eagle and shield. Knuckle bow is fancy with “U.S.” cast in the center and the pommel is regulation style. Grip is of tortoise shell bound with triple wire wrap. Scabbard is of silver plated iron with engraved brass furniture. CONDITION: Very good. The patina is untouched, the blade is bright, etching strong with a darkly stained area near the ricasso. Grip wire has minor losses but is tightly wound, hilt is a bit loose. Scabbard is fine. 4-47474 CW (1,000-1,500)
