Mixed media including watercolor, pencil, body color, gum Arabic and black chalk on vellum Framed in elaborate Louis XIV style Labeled Heydenryk frame Signed lower right “P.J. Redoute 1839″ Known as the “Raphael of flowers”, Pierre Joseph Redoute was the official court painter of Marie Antoinette at Versailles, and later of Josephine Bonaparte’s at Malmaison. While the Belgian painter and botanist was primarily self taught (within a family of artists), ultimately he was guided into the much respected field of botanical illustration. Under the direction of several acclaimed instructors he came to catalog and dissect flora in various collections and participate in several botanical expeditions.
