WILLIAM HENRY DETHLEF KOERNER (American, 1878-1938) “ELLIE’S TENTH BIRTHDAY”. Oil on board Housed in a gilt wood frame behind glass Signed “W H D Koerner” and dated “03” lower left Well known magazine and book illustrator, Koerner’s training and connections early on marked him for success. First studying at the Art Institute of Chicago he then moved onto the Art Student’s League, where he trained with Norman Rockwell’s teacher, George Bridgman. Early recognition for his illustrations led him to continue his studies in Delaware with Howard Pyle. Timed perfectly, his colleagues there included N.C.Wyeth, Harvey Dunn and several other luminaries in the world of illustration. Book and magazine commissions took him throughout the United States, and he ultimately became associated with his illustrations of Western life. Following the death of the artist, his widow chose to keep his active studio intact. It is now displayed at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center’s Whitney Museum of Western Art in Cody, Wyoming.
