UNSIGNED (English, Early 18th Century) PORTRAIT OF A GREYHOUND AND HER CATCH.

Oil on canvas Housed in a modern replacement black & gold molded wood frame Unsigned NOTE: The composition of the portrait with the dog and her catch separated from the forest by a road is likely intentional. Canute laws had been in effect for hundreds of years & were quite strict as to who could own greyhounds and where they could be used for coursing & hunting. The laws before being repealed, stated that greyhounds could be used for coursing & hunting no closer than 10 miles from a forest. If a greyhound belonging to a freeman was to be found in the forest hunting, that dog along with 10 schillings was forfeited to the King. Throughout English history, the ownership of greyhounds was considered to be a symbol of status. This portrait a testament to the regard that the owner held for this greyhound & her hunting ability. SIZE: 34-1/2″ x 43-1/4″. Overall: 39-1/2″ x 48″ CONDITION: Lined, restored, good 50807-13 (5,000-7,000) – Lot 1291
